Everything Games and Gaming in Victoria

Last year I talked about all the game stores in Victoria and the new ones opening up (here and here). I was worried that the market would saturate and I would probably have been right ten or more years ago. It seems I am happily wrong.

I recently conducted  a demo of Malifaux at Everything Games (website and facebook) in Langford, a district in Victoria. It opened about seven months ago. Its a little out of the way for me but they have a huge gaming area.

I noticed a month and a bit ago that they started carrying Malifaux and when I mentioned that I could give some demos sometime they were enthusiastic. I conducted a demo game this past Sunday and will do so again this Sunday. They have been doing well and it has filled a large hole in the gaming scene on the Western part of Victoria. The owner is friendly, engaging and knowledgeable.

For eight gaming stores to be within an hour's drive from one another, it shows how gaming is becoming common and not a fringe hobby.

Guild Riflemen

Malifaux Guild Riflemen are extremely accurate and can cut down charging models if they activate and focus early. They were also an early plastic model that Wyrd produced so now that i'm focusing on Guild models I wanted to paint one of the oldest ones I have.
As a note, the sword on the model that carries it is very fragile. It was going down the path to breakage so I used some GW liquid greenstuff to firm it up. Beyond that the rest of the models look great and go together well. Just take your time though and follow directions (the Wyrd website has lots of tutorials).
So I primed black. Then painted the hat and cloak/jacket P3 Coal Black then drybrushed P3 Trollblood Base.
Then painted the leather bits P3 Bootstrap Leather and drybrushed with P3 Rucksack Tan. Some parts were then lightly drybrushed with P3 Hammerfall Khaki.
The gun stock was painted with P3 Thamar Black. The gunbarrel and metal parts were painted with P3 Pig Iron and lightly drybrushed with P3 Quicksilver.
Some parts of kit were painted with P3 Traitor Green and drybrushed with P3 Iosian Green. Others were painted with P3 Bloodstone.
The goggles and gun scope were painted with P3 Arcane Blue and lightly flicked with P3 Frostbite. The whole model was then washed with GW Devlan Mud.
The base was molded in with air drying putty and pressed into with the model's feet. After the base dried the models were glued in and some Army Painter Meadow Flowers were put on. The outside was painted with GW Mecritite Red.

I think they will complement many of my guild models that are vulnerable to charges and opposing models vulnerable to accurate shooting.

FA Dindrezi Fleet and Battle for Valhalla Pt 1

The above is a picture of a portion of my friend's Dindrezi fleet. The paint scheme is incredibly simple and incredibly effective. Prime flat black, drybrush dark grey, lightly drybrush a lighter grey and trim in red. It makes the fleet look evil and badass, exactly what the Dindrezi should. Above is, from front to back, a dreadnaught, newsculpt battleship, newsculpt frigate and cruiser

My friend and I also played the first and second scenarios in the Battle for Valhalla starter box to get used to the new rules. We have not played since the box came out. These two scenarios are short and each scenario introduces rules as they are played in sequence. Very smart way of doing things. We're looking forward to our next game.

Guild Warden

The warden model for the Guild faction I have not used not played against, but it looks like a very good model and board control model. It was also simple to put together, except for the claws.

I primed Krylon black. Then drybrushed heavily P3 Pig Iron and drybrushed P3 Cold Steel. Then I applied a light drybrush of 1/3 P3 Necrotite Green and 2/3 Cold Steel. I then gave it a wash with GW Badab Black. On the glowy areas I used P3 Wurm Green and drybrushed with Necrotite Green with a dab of P3 Menoth White Highlight on the chest piece. I then used a drybrush of Cold Steel on the chain for the claw. I then used P3 Rhulic Gold to trim the armour. Finally a wash of GW Devlan Mud was applied.
I love the look it gives. Almost a tired reality. I would use it on any Cryx I might get in the future.

Infinity 3rd Edition Starter - Received!

Hooray! I finally received my copy of Infinity 3rd edition Operation Icestorm starter from my local store, Dice Bag Games!
You get seven models for PanOceana and seven for the Nomads as well as a bonus figure for the first orders that went out. You also get a starter rulebook to get used to the basics of the rules, dice and punch out marker and scenery.
Now the harder part...assembly and painting.

Beasts of War have fantastic videos with one of the Corvus Belli Infinity gents, Carlos available here. If you are on the fence about this game system, watch them to see the models and learn the rules. These guys playtested the new edition for two years and the videos were proof positive for me to make this my number one sci-fi skirmish game.

Guildball Pre-Season 1.3 is out!

Guildball pre-season 1.3 rules are out and they are streamlining into what will soon be the final product before it releases to the world.

A friend and I tried out Morticians and Masons again and I lost with the Masons. The rules are definitely cleaned up better but the games still seem more beatdown and less ball scoring. Still having fun though. Everything gets released in December.

Rules, paper dolls, and guild sheets here. All free.

Neverborn Tuco

Tuco was a family member of the Ortega family before he was captured by the nephilium. The tortured him and warped his mind. Now he’s a nephilium himself and out for revenge.

This model will be the last Neverborn model I’ll paint for a while. For Malifaux models I want to concentrate on one faction, the Guild, and mercenaries they can use for the next few years. That way I’ll have a selection of masters and models to use in games and tournaments.
So I primed Krylon Black, then a rough drybrush with P3 Battlefield Brown. Then the lower jacket was drybrushed with P3 Bootstrap Leather and lightly drybrushed with P3 Rucksack Tan. I then washed the lower jacket with GW Baal Red. The upper part of the jacket, hands, shotgun and face was painted in P3 Thamar Black. Then the upper jacket was drybrushed with P3 Greatcoat Grey and lightly drybrushed with P3 Cryx Bane Highlight.
The face and hands were drybrushed with P3 Ryn Flesh and washed with GW Baal Red. Parts of the shotgun were painted with P3 Pig Iron and the hair was painted with P3 Coal Black. The horns were painted with P3 Menoth White Highlight and washed with GW Gryphon Sepia. The whole model was then washed with GW Devlan Mud.
The base was flocked and some Army Painter Meadow Grass was put in the back and an IMEX cactus was put in the front.
This model is also the first of my “free time” models. This is the first time I met this mark since I started this plan and its my desk job that I have to thank for that. I always plan to make 260 points worth of models (five points per week). I calculate each mass production model being one point (like 40k marines or Cygnar Longgunners), solos and cavalry and individual models being two points, jacks and larger models being three and vehicles being five. Being ahead of schedule is really relaxing but I’ll still paint models I either need now or in the near future to keep ahead of schedule.
