So Wyrd Miniatures announced, on the 23rd of July, that they were starting the process to beta test a third edition of Malifaux.
The purpose of this edition is to tidy up rules, make things more steamlined, reduce the number of condition, and more. They are also making the hiring of crews based on keywords more important for thematic purposes and to allow multiple master crews. The whole skinny on this is here and summed in this excellent other blog, Malifaux Musings.
There are several changes to the list of playable masters. Some have dropped one of their dual factions. Other have gained one. Some current models/characters have become masters. Some are no longer masters and may not be available to play (Nicodem, Collodi, Lilith, Ramos) until a Dead Man's Hand pack is released.
There will be a closed beta test as well, which greatly ironed out the bugs for the second edition. Once the rules are ready for release, all the stat cards and rules will be available for free and in seven languages! The rules have been free for the second edition for some time and I am glad they are continuing this.
What do I think of it? Excited. There will be new sculpts and crew packs but the older metal 1st edition and current 2nd edition plastics will still be playable. The shiny and new ruleset combined with these new models may draw back old players and bring in new ones. With rules and stat cards being free for all the old models, retailers will still be able to sell their product. I hope it is a win-win-win and am looking forward to it.
