Guild Ball - Kickstarter - Second Demo and Funding
My friend and I had a second demo with the newer rules and we like it enough to get involved in the Guild Ball Kickstarter. Our first game I posted here.
After the first goal was scored the plays became fast and furious. There was better editing of the rules and more solidified changes done to the characters. There is a lot of tactics and special plays that we have just begun to scratch the surface with.
So far the kickstarter is funded twice over and have unlocked another team and some special players from the Union, which may become their own team if their funding goals are met. I'm going for the five team package with some add-ons.
Check out the kickstarter yourself, download the free rules, stat cards and cut out standees to see if you like the game.

Gottacon 2014 - Sunday
So on Sunday at Gottacon 2014, I played a quick little card game called Love Letter. It is a quick (15 minutes or so) card gamethat is definitly one to have as a breather between other games or when yu are waiting for everyone to show up to the main event. The lady who taught the game also went through the basics of another one called Rise of Augustus. I liked the concept and speed at which it could be played that I bought one at the convention from Curious Comics's booth.
The Victoria Lego Users Group was here, or VicLUG for short. They are a group of people who expound on the joy and learning that can be had with Lego, including Lego combat. Always fun to see and always makes me realize that I need to take the Lego out of my basement and play with it once in a while.
The video games were here in force with their tooled up consoles or laptops.
Local video game companies were also here to show and sell their wares.
After the Love Letter game and walking around I played in the Sunday Malifaux tournament. Although I lost two and won one it was a big hoot to play. I have been leaning more to Malifaux over Warmachine for this fun factor.
Lastly I picked up some more Malifaux miniatures from Dice Bag Games' stall and called it a day. A great event weekend and will be back next year.

Gottacon 2014 - Saturday
On Saturday morning I went to play a role-playing game but the GM was sick so the game was cancelled.
Instead I offered to the fellow running the Saturday Malifaux to demo some games for people. The first was for a father and young son, who after the game was done exclaimed that he wanted to play again as they were leaving. I also demoed for another fellow who has been interested in the game but wanted to know more. As I was demoing both games others came and watched so it was a successful few hours.
Next to me was the demo table for Drake. Its a game made in Vancouver and the models are very nice. It uses a d10 and Magic: the Gathering like card playing system. As I don't really need another miniature game what grabbed me the most was the wonderful work on the table itself both for the inner construction but also the fold-able aspect of it.
Also nearby was a Flames of War tournament. Flames of War is a small scale WW2 game.
I have been interested in it off and on. If I do get into it, I would make a 3rd Canadian division of my Grandfathers Regiment; the North Shore regiment.
After a quick lunch it was off to the Ticket to Ride tournament witht he winner getting a place in the North American tournament in Indiana at GENCON. I squeaked by to get in the top 16 but could not advance to the finals. Still had lots of fun and learned some new strategies.
I then had supper and played Fiasco for the first time with the Super Science ruleset. No, the fellow above was not the organizer but i had to take a picture of him. Fiasco is a collaborative (no GM) storytelling game that I have heard only good things about. This experience did not disappoint. We ended up with me being a superhero called 180 BPM (beats per minute) whose landlord tried to blackmail me into getting his sister's superhero team (who I was a member) to stop calling him because they thought he was the superhero, "The Landlord". His sister, "The Pantsuit", had a lackey who designed her special suits and wanted out of her domineering thumb and join the villainous Dr. Cacophonous. They were also designing an exploding bust of Beethoven for a nefarious plot. The evil doctor was approached by myself to make special glowsticks for my super-hero rave party because there was a shortage. It sounds complicated but the first half-hour is rolling dice and determining plot points that all players collaberate on to set the story. Then everyone gets two scenes and good or bad dice to give to others. Then there is a twist and a break. Then are the final two scenes where you keep the dice. The dice are rolled again and the final result of your character's success is determined then played out in short paragraph scenes. This game ended up as a dark-comedy and was thoroughly enjoyable. You can also check out Will Weaton's videos on Fiasco here, here and here.
Then I went home for the night.

Guildball - Kickstarter - First Demo Game
A friend and I have been interested in a new Kickstarter called Guildball. Its basically six on six soccer-like miniature skirmish game in a low magic setting fantasy world. They have demo materiel including rules, cutouts and stat cards for the Fishermen and Butcher's guilds at their Kickstarter site.
The rules are simple with depth but still in a late beta stage. The imagination in the concept is strong and abilities of each player get boosts from other players on the same team. Each player also generates Influence that goes into a pool and is then allocated to your players. Expert players can have more influence than others and each influence allows actions to be performed by spending them, although not all actions are cheap. It also has a great system called momentum points where actions players do generate these MP's that allow you to take out of turn actions, recover from severe conditions and damage and most importantly kick the ball at the goal. In fact the game encourages passing as you get an MP just for doing so and you get an out of turn move as a bonus.
The game is played on a three by three foot board with little terrain. The quickstart rules recommend no terrain to get used to the rules. Our first game took two and a half hours but it went quicker as we got used to the rules. We are both not completely sold on it yet but do wish to play another game. Perhaps then we will dive into this new and interesting Kickstarter game.

Gottacon 2014 - Friday
Gottacon this year was held at the Victoria Convention Center, which is directly behind the Empress Hotel. Gottacon's Facebook page is here.
I took the day off Friday to get my badge early because of the wickedly long lineups last year. After I got my badge I walked around the convention for several hours talking to people at the booths, store owners and friends...until I tried to leave for a Chai Latte at Liberty Cafe. I was politely informed that the convention opens officially at 5pm and that I should not have been allowed to wander through the convention area. Oops. Since it was still a few hours before that time I read a book while enjoying my drink at Liberty Cafe.
On Friday night and Sunday I played in two Malifaux Tournaments. The folks I played against were the same great bunch, with some changes, that I played against the previous two years.
In total over the two tournaments I played six games and won two. I learned a lot about my Lilith Neverborn forces and about what other crews can do. I also liked the terrain that was used.

Neverborn Nephilium Barbados, Terror Tots, Young and Mature
I picked up a new plastic Lilith box set and the new larger Nephilium pack recently to add to my older metal Lilith set. This is because of the new upgrade, Rapid Growth, in Malifaux 2E that allows you to summon the next larger Nephilium once a model kills another model. That means I need more of each type.
I painted these guys similarly to my metal Terror Tots models here. I just substituted P3 paints for GW paints for most colors. I started primed black, then P3 Khador Red Base, then drybrushed GW Red Gore. Then lighter drybrush of P3 Midlund Flesh and a light touch of GW Elf Flesh. The loincloth was P3 Meridius Blue then drybrushed P3 Arcane Blue. The horns were painted P3 Menoth White Highlight. The metal parts were painted P3 Ironhull Grey and drybrushed P3 Cold Steel and a lighter drybrush of P3 Quick Silver. They were then washed with GW Purple. Then I based them the same as my metal Lilith Gang here.
My new plastic Young Nephiliums followed my metal young Nephilium here.Same as the Terror Tots for paint except more of the fleshes were drybrushed on to show they had grown more skin.
As per above.
Barbaros followed my metal young Nephilium above.
My Mature Nephilium followed my metal one here. I drybrushed even more flesh color on for the reason above.
The only problem was basing all these models. I am worried that because they are not affixed to the base but rather tot he hardened clay on the base that they can come off in the future. We shall see.

Guild Exorcist
The Exorcist is a good Wyrd Miniatures Malifaux model to help your crew deal with undead or spirit threats. I wanted him to look like his picture below on the original stat card.
For my paints I started with P3 Exile Blue, then drybrushed a mix of 50/50 Exile Blue and P2 Menoth White Highlight. The a 1/3 ratio of Exile Blue and Menoth White Highlight. The hat and boots I touched up with P3 Thamar Black and drybrushed with P3 Greatcoat Grey. The red bits I painted P3 Skorne Red then drybrushed with P3 Khador Red Base. The face was done in P3 Khardic Flesh and drybrushed P3 Midlund Flesh. The pouches and crossbow were done in P3 Bootstrap Leather and drybrushed with P3 Khador Red Highlight. The gold bits were painted with P3 Rhulic Gold.
The brick base was done with air drying putty, explained here. The rim of the base was painted with GW Mecrite Red.

Neverborn Waldgeists
Here are my Malifaux Neverborn Waldgeists. I have not used them yet but they fit with Lilith's illusionary forest making upgrade, as well as Zorida. The background is from Corvus' Miniatures.
Primed black, drybrushed GW Dark Angels Green, lighter drybrush of GW Goblin Green and final lighter drybrush of P3 Necrotite Green.
Then P3 Khardac Flesh drybrushed on the wooden parts with P3 Midlund Flesh lightly drybrushed and finally P3 Ryn Flesh even lighter drybrushed on. The eyes were painted P3 Skorne Red with drybrushed P3 Khador Red Base.
I then washed the green areas with GW Gryphone Sepia and the branch areas with GW Baal Red. I then went ove rthe green areas with a drybrush of P3 Necrotite Green again. The bases were painted dollarstore brown, flocked with GW flock and dead branches from walks through he forest used as logs. The lichen is generic hobby store lichen. The base was painted GW Liche Purple and the dots P3 Solid Gold.
